The carpet skyscraper works of Iranian artist Babak Golkar draw a relationship between the two dimensional and three dimensional, architecture and art, and ultimately – the associations with the much-debated tension between east and west. Through extruding the elaborate ornamental patterning of nomadic persian carpets, the pieces generate a dynamic visual and conceptual reflection on existent cultural barriers. They do not only reference the erected symbols of western patriotism, they also bring attention to the emerging megapolis’ and the advance of oil powered Arab countries. His work  has a much deeper meaning behind it, however , focusing on the links with elaborate surface pattern of the carpet layering with three dimensional architectural forms , informs my own work within pattern design based on the architecture and detailing of library buildings to become more than just surface pattern, and to further research and develop the possibility of creating a lithophane pattern tile.

‘lying between graphic design and photography is the series of images by Alexandre  Jacques, which meander away from the traditional notions of architectural imagery by focusing instead on the visual repetition inherent a building’s façade. jacques aims his camera at a distinct point on structural landmarks in Paris, New York and Brisbane, honing in on a very specific piece of the overall tower. the chosen exteriors may be considered invasive modern towers by many, yet the artist’s captures present them in a completely alternative manner, accentuating instead the patterns, horizontals and various linear arrangements that are seemingly boundless. rhythmic golden strands represent the New York times building by renzo piano and a dizzying floral ornaments describe Paris’ tour ariane. the aesthetic alliterations ‘lose the viewer in a world where boundaries disappear. in the middle of such a mass man no longer seems to exist.’’

Javier de Riba patterns tiles onto floors of abandoned urban spaces. Some paintings composed of a single square frame – isolated within their context to highlight a juxtaposition between neglected and new – others are on large surfaces that sweep across entire floors. “mirroring traditional motifs that embody the culture of Barcelona, intentions interweave floral symbols and shapes to form decorative ornamentation throughout meticulous layering of colours applied in a particular sequence over time.
